In human society, the position of alcohol has always been irregular. In the prohibition era, alcohol was regarded as the devil in the form of liquid but now researchers have indicated that moderate quantities of alcohol can really be of good advantage to the total health.
A lot of questions are flipping around on the effect of alcohol intake on sexual health and its probability of the drink to interfere with climax scenarios and libido. Probably, erectile dysfunction is the most common sexual problem among men in the USA. About 300,000 cases are diagnosed annually for this issue in addition to the vast majority of those cases that are not reported. In order to have full understanding of the relationship between erectile dysfunction and alcohol, it is very important to know the process of achieving erection. Through physical and sensory perceptions, the brain is stimulated and it directs the penis muscles to relax as it enhances the flow of blood to the penis. The penis is exerted by the incoming blood as it expands the penis to create an erection. The ability to keep the erection is based on the capacity of the penile muscle to hold the blood for a long period of time.
Thus, erection is based on the blood flow and that is the reason conditions such as arteriosclerosis and diabetes that result to hardened blood vessels and affect blood pressure can increase the volume of the blood. The major action of alcohol is to increase the volume of the blood which then causes higher blood pressure. This erection lasts until the excessive liquid is removed from the blood through urine. Theoretically, alcohol intake should help erection and not cause ED. Also, alcohol serves as a sedative and could be helpful to stop performance anxiety which is the major root of erectile dysfunction in the younger men. There are no studies that have made conclusive support or refute this particular claim. Therefore, it could be realistic that drunken men do have better sex but know that intoxication is not a solution for erectile dysfunction. More so, other forms of intoxication such as drug abuse and smoking have been evidence of the cause of almost a quarter of all dysfunctions.
Where alcohol may eventually succeed as an aphrodisiac to get people in the mood, it may fail in the execution. The reason is that, during an erection, penis fills with blood and the vessel close to prevent backflow in order for the penis to remain erect. Within a short period of time, overconsumption of alcohol causes the blood vessels in the penis to increase in size thereby allow more blood flow, but prevent those vessels from closing. For this reason, the penis may become erect but will not remain so since there is nothing to prevent the backflow. However in a long term, overconsumption of alcohol really damages the blood vessels and adds more effect to the hypertension and heart disease in order to cause erectile dysfunction. In healthy men, moderate alcohol intake will never cause erectile dysfunction.
